SHANKLIN CHINE.
Thirty years ago, like many other spots, Shanklin was but a small hamlet: now it is one of the favourite resorts in the Isle of Wight. Its celebrated 'Chine," like most others on the south coast, is a narrow gorge cut by a stream of water through the sandstone rock. Entering at the top, on one hand is a chalybeate spring, on the other a tiny waterfall of about forty feet. From this the path descends amid mosses, ferns, trees, and steep cliffs of dark rock, the rivulet being crossed here and there by a rustic bridge. The little glen is certainly one of great beauty; but considering its small scale—the whole being only about a quarter of a mile long—is perhaps not quite worth some of the eulogistic language that has been bestowed upon it.
