KNARESBOROUGH, FROM THE CASTLE.
This old town is built on a hill on the bank of the river Nidd. In former times it was protected not only by a wall, but also by a moat, much of which can still be traced, though a great deal filled up and built upon. The North Eastern Railway crosses the river by a handsome stone bridge with castellated parapet and piers; and there are two other bridges, known respectively as the High and Low Bridges. The church of St. John the Baptist is a fine old cruciform building with a central tower. The Castle, on a rocky eminence, was built soon after the Conquest, and was, like so many others, dismantled by Act of Parliament in 1648. The ruins and precincts are now laid out and maintained by the Corporation as pleasure-grounds.
