Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used)

EASTBOURNE: THE PARADE.
The most fashionable watering-place of Sussex, and perhaps of the South Coast, possesses a very pleasant and bracing climate, and has developed extensively under the management of the Duke of Devonshire, the principal landlord. The sea-front extends for nearly three miles, much of which has roads or paths at different levels, with slopes between them. At the east end of the Parade is a fort known as The Redoubt, and at the western end a tower called the "Wish," which appears in the view. Beyond in the distance is Beachy Head three miles west of Eastbourne, a chalk cliff 575 feet in height, which gives so much shelter that Eastbourne is furnished with trees to a degree unusual on this coast. The pier is 1,000 feet long, and possesses a pavilion and other conveniences.
