DOUGLAS, ISLE OF MAN.
The island formerly known as Mona is about 45 miles long, and has many peculiarities. It swarms with memorials of the Norse and Danish invasions, and many of the local names are Scandinavian; but up to the end of the last century its language was Celtic. It is renowned for its tailless cats; and curious for its laws and customs. To-day it is sought for its scenery and climate, the latter only differing about 15 degrees in the average temperature of winter and summer. Douglas is the largest and most important town, and is situated in a splendid bay bounded by grand cliffs. It is now a fine and imposing watering-place, unusually well supplied with large hotels, and has two piers, upon one of which is the harbour lighthouse.
