Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used)

TRENTHAM HALL: SOUTH FRONT.
On the side of the Trent, and almost within sight of Stoke, stands this noble seat of the Duke of Sutherland. The house is built on the flat of the valley, while the park rises on the slope above. There was once a monastery here; but all trace of it has long vanished. The present mansion was commenced early in the last century, but greatly enlarged and completed for the late Duke by Sir Charles Barry. The neighbouring church contains some very early work, and some interesting monuments. The gardens of Trentham have a wide reputation for their beauty, amongst horticulturists and others, and contain a large sheet of water: the Duke also maintains a poultry-yard, and has taken many prizes at exhibitions.
