Boards worn, outer joints cracked, foxing and dampstaining to outer leaves, occasional foxing to interior leaves, several library stamps and markings.

Volume four of Opere di Lazzaro Spallanzani. Quarter leather binding with paste paper-covered boards. Titles and decorations stamped in gilt on spine. Text in Italian. 446 pp + [6] pp index and errata. Ex-Boston Public Library copy with engraved bookplate on front pastedown indicating that this was one of the considerable number of volumes initially donated by Brahmin businessman Joshua Bates in 1854 as part of his financial endowment of this institution. 

Spallanzani was an 18th century Jesuit priest, professor, and scientist who made many discoveries and observations about natural history. This volume contains his writings on animal reproduction in snails, earthworms, and salamanders, as well as his experimental findings about various aspects of the circulatory system.
