Another great violin maker was Giuseppe Guarnerius, often referred to as “the Stradivari of the North”. He was born in 1666 in Cremona, and was a contemporary of Stradivari. In the 1690s, he moved to Mantua and then to Venice, where he worked for some of the most powerful families in the city. During this period, he developed a unique style of violin-making which became known as the “Guarnerius Model”, and he was responsible for some of the earliest examples of this model.

In contrast to Stradivari, Guarnerius tended to use a wider arch and a thicker top, and his instruments were known for their powerful and brilliant tone. He is also known for his unique varnish, which often has a reddish-brown hue. Guarnerius’ work was very sought after in the 18th century, and he was even commissioned by some of the great composers of the time.

Guarnerius’ instruments have become highly sought after in recent years, with some selling for millions of dollars. While Stradivari’s instruments remain the benchmark of quality, there is no doubt that Guarnerius was a master craftsman in his own right, producing instruments that are admired and respected by violin makers and players around the world.
