DESCRIPTION

A collection of lectures on the French Revolution delivered by poet and historian William Smyth.

Smyth was only 24 when the French revolution began, and was one of the first Englishmen to write about it. As well as contextualising the revolution and chronologically relating its key dates and events, Smyth comparatively analyses the accounts of other contemporary writers.

Until 1807 when Smyth was appointed the Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University, he tutored the son of playwright and politician Richard Brinsley Sheridan. According to contemporary accounts, the relationship troublesome both personally and financially.

Marbled paper to the front board of volume III is slightly different from the rest of the boards.


CONDITION

In quarter cloth binding over marbled boards. Externally, very smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine, with some slight scuffing of the leather at the joints. The front and rear hinges are starting on all three volumes, but remain firm. Internally, firmly bound. Lightly foxed to the endpapers, but pages are otherwise bright and clean.
