Galerius Valerius Maximinus, originally named Daza, served as Roman emperor from 310 to 313. He found himself entangled in the Civil wars of the Tetrarchy, contending against rival claimants for imperial control and ultimately suffering defeat at the hands of Licinius. A staunch pagan, Maximinus orchestrated one of the final persecutions of Christians, though he later issued an edict of tolerance shortly before his death. His reign signaled the onset of a tumultuous half-century of civil strife within the empire.
