  • Beschreibung: Wunderbar erhaltene Rötelzeichnung einer Beweinungsgruppe mit der Maria auf einem Thron, die nach der Abnahme vom Kreuz den toten Sohn in ihrem Schoß betrauert. Der Urheber unserer Pieta, Karl Wilhelm Wach, war einer der bedeutendsten Künstler der Berliner Malerschule. Nach der Teilnahme an den Freiheitskriegen 1813 und 1815 und der künstlerischen Weiterbildung in Paris (u.a. bei Jaques Louis David und Antoine-Jean Gros) und Rom kehrte er 1819 nach Berlin zurück und konnte durch die Unterstützung des preußischen Königs Friedrich Wilhelm III, der bereits früh die Arbeit Wachs zu schätzen wusste und auch seine Familienmitglieder von ihm porträtieren ließ, dort, in Nachbarschaft zu Tieck und Rauch, ein eigenes Atelier eröffnen. 1824 wurde er zum Professor an die Berliner Akademie berufen und wurde 1827 zum königlichen Hofmaler. Ab 1840 bis zu seinem Tode bekleidete er schließlich das Amt des Vizedirektors der Königlich Preußischen Akademie der Künste.

  • Description: Beautifully preserved red chalk drawing of a group of mourners with Mary on a throne, mourning her dead son in her lap after taking him down from the cross. The author of our Pieta, Karl Wilhelm Wach, was one of the most important artists of the Berlin school of painting. After taking part in the wars of liberation in 1813 and 1815 and continuing his artistic training in Paris (with Jaques Louis David and Antoine-Jean Gros, among others) and Rome, he returned to Berlin in 1819 and was able to open his own studio there, in the neighbourhood of Tieck and Rauch, thanks to the support of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III, who appreciated Wach's work early on and also had his family members portrayed by him. He was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy in 1824 and became royal court painter in 1827. From 1840 until his death, he held the office of vice-director of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts.
