The Story Behind the Moment

In the summer of 1988, the European Championship was in full swing, and the final match was nothing short of a spectacle. The Netherlands had made it to the final and were up against the formidable Soviet Union. The two sides had battled it out before in the group stage, where the Soviet Union had come out on top with a 1-0 victory. But this time, it was for all the marbles, and the stakes were higher than ever before.

The match started off with the Soviet Union dominating possession, but the Dutch defense was up to the task. Marco van Basten, the star striker for the Netherlands, had already had a storming tournament… but he was about to make his presence felt in an even bigger way.

In the 54th minute, a long pass was played over the top of the Soviet defense. Van Basten, who was lurking on the right flank, saw an opportunity and started his run towards the ball.
