The book discuses the symbolism described in the Book of Revelation... it attempts to prove that many of the fundamental practices of the Church of Rome, and its Modus Operandi in general, stem from non-scriptural precedents... Most contemporary scholars have rejected the book's arguments as erroneous and based on a flawed understanding of the Babylonian religion... Some fundamentalist Protestants regard Hislop's book as proof that the Roman Catholic Church is the continuation of the ancient Babylonian religion.
