  • Beschreibung: Die Zeichnung entstand auf einer Reise, die den englischen Architekten, Kartographen, archäologischen Schriftsteller, Kunstsammler, Numismatiker und literarischen Übersetzer William Barnard Clarke zwischen 1838 und 1839 nach Frankreich und später im Jahr 1839 weiter nach Italien führte. Detailgenau nimmt der englische Architekt hier die die baulichen Besonderheiten und den Schmuck des römischen Triumphbogens aus dem 1. Jahrhundert auf. Das Relief an der Schmalseite des Bogens zeigt Trophäen flankiert von einem ein Paar angeketteter Gefangenen.

  • Description: The drawing was made on a journey that took the English architect, cartographer, archaeological writer, art collector, numismatist and literary translator William Barnard Clarke to France between 1838 and 1839 and later on to Italy in 1839. Here, the English architect reproduces in great detail the structural features and ornamentation of the Roman triumphal arch from the 1st century. The relief on the narrow side of the arch shows trophies flanked by a pair of chained prisoners.
