  • Beschreibung: Als Jahresgabe des Württembergischen Kunstvereins an seine Mitglieder wurde für das Jahr 1842 diese ausdrucksstarke Historiendarstellung ausgegeben. Auf seinem kraftstrotzenden Ross sitzend, wird der württembergische Graf Eberhard im Bart (1445 Urach - 1496 Schloss Hohentübingen in Tübingen) in einem gotischen Plattenharnisch und einem Pilgerumhang mit Jakobsmuschel gezeigt. Am Ende seiner Pilgerfahrt, der Heiligen Stadt Jerusalem, angekommen hebt er die Hände zum Gebet gefaltet vor die Brust. Sein Pferd, obwohl offenbar müde von der langen Reise, wirkt nun im Angesicht des lang ersehnten Ziels unruhig und aufgeregt. In direktem Blickdialog mit dem Fürsten steht eine junge Frau mit ihren neugierigen Kindern, die in einladender Geste auf die hinter ihr liegende Stadt Jerusalem weist. Diese, in einer weiten von Hügeln umgebenen Ebene liegende Stadt unter dem hellen Himmel, steht im Kontrast zu der Entourage Eberhards, die gerade erst aus dem dunklen Wald links heraustritt. In einen fingierten architektonischen Rahmen eingefasst, mit allegorischen Figuren in den oberen Zwickeln des abschliessenden Segmentbogens, bildete dieses Motiv eines von 16 Darstellungen eines monumentalen Freskenzyklus zur Geschichte Württembergs. Der deutsche Maler Anton von Gegenbaur wurde 1837 damit beauftragt, die großen Historienbilder im Neuen Stuttagrter Schloss auszuführen, womit er bis 1854 beschäftigt war. Dort sind die Originale im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört worden. Erhalten sind lediglich einige der Skizzenkartons Gegenbaurs, die im Stuttgarter Museum der Bildenden Künste aufbewahrt sind.

  • Zustand: Sehr guter Zustand. Das Blatt ist altersbedingt schwach verfärbt und weist stellenweise geringfügige Verschmutzungen auf. Insbesondere das Trägerblatt ist teils deutlich verschmutzt und in den Ecken bestoßen. Entlang der Kanten sind mehrere Knickspuren erkennbar. Die Darstellung macht einen sehr guten Eindruck.

  • Description: This expressive historical depiction was issued as an annual gift of the Württembergischer Kunstverein to its members for the year 1842. Sitting on his powerful steed, the Württemberg Count Eberhard im Bart (1445 Urach - 1496 Hohentübingen Palace in Tübingen) is shown in Gothic plate armour and a pilgrim's cloak with a scallop shell. Arriving at the end of his pilgrimage, the Holy City of Jerusalem, he raises his hands folded in front of his chest in prayer. His horse, although obviously tired from the long journey, now seems restless and excited in the face of the long-awaited destination. In direct eye dialogue with the prince stands a young woman with her curious children, who points in an inviting gesture to the city of Jerusalem lying behind her. This city, lying in a wide plain surrounded by hills under a bright sky, contrasts with Eberhard's entourage, which has just emerged from the dark forest on the left. Set in a fictitious architectural frame, with allegorical figures in the upper spandrels of the concluding segmental arch, this motif formed one of 16 depictions in a monumental fresco cycle on the history of Württemberg. The German painter Anton von Gegenbaur was commissioned in 1837 to execute the large history paintings in the New Stuttagrter Palace, which he did until 1854. The originals were destroyed there during the Second World War. All that has survived are some of Gegenbaur's sketch cartoons, which are kept in the Stuttgart Museum of Fine Arts.

  • Condition: Very good condition. The sheet is slightly discoloured due to its age and shows minor soiling in places. Especially the backing sheet is partly clearly soiled and bumped at the corners. Several crease marks are visible along the edges. The illustration makes a very good impression.
