  • Beschreibung: Innerhalb von Johann Christian Klengels etwa fünfzigjähriger Schaffenszeit lässt sich seine stilistische Entwicklung von noch spätbarock komponierten, in der Tradition seines Lehrers Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich stehenden Landschaften hin zu idealen sowie zu realistischen Dorfansichten und vorromantisch anmutenden Landschaften seiner reifen Jahre verfolgen. Doch was sich kaum ändert, ist das Repertoire an Bildelementen. So zieht sich ein Motiv wie der rastende Hirte mit Rinderherde am Ufer eines Flusses durch Klengels gesamtes Schaffen. Auch Felsbrocken, ein Steg über ein Gewässer und einige charakteristische Bäume sowie der Ausblick zu einem Dorf sind die stets wiederkehrenden bescheidenen Elemente, mit denen der Künstler sein umfangreiches OEuvre von hunderten Zeichnungen, Radierungen und Gemälden schuf. Die Kunst bestand in seinem Falle in der Variation und gleichsam in der Lust an der Wiederkehr des Immergleichen. Erfahrung und Rückgriff auf Bewährtes - wie die Gestalt des zusammengerollt schlummernden Hirten und die ruhenden, grasenden und wiederkäuenden Rinder - treffen zusammen mit der nicht nachlassenden Neugier auf die unspektakulären, gleichwohl harmonischen dörflichen Szenerien, die ihm seit seiner Kindheit in Kesselsdorf aus Dresdens Umgebung vertraut waren. Wenn er schließlich als reifer Zeichner wie im vorliegenden Falle auf so ein bewährtes Motiv zurückgriff, konnte er sich ganz auf den Zusammenklang zwischen Gestein, Laub, Gewässer und Staffage, auf die lockere und zugleich konkret bleibende Zeichenweise mit raschem Schraffieren und vor allem auf die räumlichen Zusammenhänge zwischen Wiese, Wald und dem Ausblick in die Ferne konzentrieren. Obwohl er hier fast die gesamte Fläche des Blattes mit dem Rötel überzog, gelang es ihm mit Leichtigkeit, durch die Verteilung von Licht und Schatten die Volumina der Tiere und Felsen, die unterschiedlichen Charakteristika der Laub- und Nadelbäume dahinter erlebbar zu machen. Dazu hatte er eine eigenwillige Strichführung mit der Feder, schwarzer Kreide oder eben Rötel entwickelt, die aus einem System von ineinander übergehenden Kürzeln, Kringeln und Schraffuren besteht. Sie folgt zwar keineswegs exakt dem anatomischen und morphologischen Wuchs der Tiere und Pflanzen, doch erzeugte Klengel damit die Illusion von wiedererkennbaren Pflanzen und charakteristischen Verhaltensweisen der Tiere. Mit diesem Zeichenstil und mit seinem unermüdlichen, bis in die letzten Lebensjahre hinein praktizierten Naturstudium wies er einer ganzen Generation von nachfolgenden Landschaftsmalern den Weg zu einer realistischen Naturauffassung. | Wasserzeichen: ("GIR")

  • Description: During Johann Christian Klengel's roughly fifty-year creative period, his stylistic development can be traced from late baroque composed landscapes in the tradition of his teacher Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich to idealistic and realistic village views and pre-romantic landscapes of his mature years. What hardly changes, however, is the repertoire of pictorial elements. A motif such as the resting shepherd with a herd of cattle on the banks of a river runs through Klengel's entire oeuvre. Boulders, a footbridge over a body of water, a few characteristic trees and a view of a village are also recurring, modest elements with which the artist created his extensive oeuvre of hundreds of drawings, etchings and paintings. In his case, art consisted of variation and, as it were, the pleasure of the recurrence of the same thing. Experience and recourse to the tried and tested - such as the figure of the curled-up, slumbering shepherd and the resting, grazing and ruminating cattle - come together with an unflagging curiosity about the unspectacular, yet harmonious village scenes that had been familiar to him from his childhood in Kesselsdorf in Dresden's neighbourhood. When, as a mature draughtsman, he finally resorted to such a proven motif as in the present case, he was able to concentrate fully on the harmony between rock, foliage, water and staffage, on the loose and at the same time concrete drawing style with rapid hatching and, above all, on the spatial relationships between meadow, forest and the view into the distance. Although he covered almost the entire surface of the sheet with red chalk, he succeeded with ease in making the volumes of the animals and rocks and the different characteristics of the deciduous and coniferous trees behind them tangible through the distribution of light and shadow. To this end, he had developed an idiosyncratic line style using pen, black chalk or red chalk, which consists of a system of merging abbreviations, squiggles and hatchings. Although it by no means follows the anatomical and morphological growth of the animals and plants exactly, Klengel used it to create the illusion of recognisable plants and characteristic animal behaviour. With this style of drawing and his tireless study of nature, which he practised until the last years of his life, he paved the way for a realistic view of nature for a whole generation of subsequent landscape painters. | Watermark: ("GIR")
