Remarks: *Portrait photo taken by the Belgian court photographer Charles Rhein with his signature in charcoal. Albert I was King of Belgium from 1909 until his death in 1934 in a mountaineering accident. He was an open-minded and modern monarch who was very popular with the people until the end. - The photographer Charles Rhein (1870-1960), born in Alsace near Strasbourg, only joined Gevaert, the world's leading photo company, as a photographer in 1920. "His outstanding talent soon came to the fore, and he eventually made it to chief photographer of the company, which he served until 1945. "Sadly, few records of Rhein have been preserved, as his company file was lost in a flooding of the cellars of the company on a cold winter's day in the early 1970s" (Hilde Van Gelder in a publication on the history of the Gevaert company). In addition to his corporate work at Gevaert, Charles Rhein was also a portrait photographer of contemporary artists, especially ca. 1925 to 1944 one of the court photographers of the Belgian royal family. Charles Rhein is a forgotten photographer today, there is hardly anything about him in the literature and his works are hardly known anymore, probably mainly because of the loss of his entire work in the company archives due to water damage. - From the photographer's personal estate we can still find a series of photographic prints from his former life that are now largely unknown and thought to be lost. Offer private ownership.
