DESCRIPTION

Highlighting the corruption, mismanagement and poor governance of Newcastle in the early 1800s, this work examines the election of civil officers, the selection of juries, the use of city revenue, the neglect of Sunderland and the city jails, among other subjects.

Illustrated with a lithograph frontispiece, with accompanying explanatory text.

While the title page refers to this as 'Vol. I.', no subsequent volumes were produced.

Authorship has been suggested as belonging to the publisher, William Andrew Mitchell.

A very smart copy of this very scarce work.


CONDITION

Rebound in paper covered boards, with endpapers renewed. Bumping to spine head and tail, with a touch of discolouration to back strip. Paper spine label lifting to perimeters. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd spot.
