DESCRIPTION
This is a complete six volume set of Winston S. Churchill's The Second World War Series, all being first edition copies published between 1948 and 1954.
These volumes form a historical memoir of the Second World War from a man who played a major role within it. Churchill wrote these books with a team of assistants, using his own notes and access to official documents whilst he was still working a a politician. The works trace the build up and commencement of the Second World War and are illustrated with maps throughout the volumes.
Volume I, The Gathering Storm, examines the events which led Britain to war with Germany. With eighteen maps and diagrams. A first edition copy published in 1948.
Volume II, Their Finest Hour, considers the fall of France. With eighteen maps and diagrams and three folding maps. This is a first edition published in 1949.
Volume III, The Grand Alliance contains Churchill's personal story of the Second World War through 1941. With eighteen maps and diagrams and three folding maps. This is a first edition copy, published in 1950.
Volume IV, The Hinge of Fate, considers how the power of the grand alliance became preponderant. With thirty-three maps and diagrams and four folding maps. This is a first edition copy published in 1951.
Volume V, Closing the Ring, covers the decisive twelve months between June 1943 and June 1944. With eighteen maps and diagrams and three folding maps. This is a first edition copy published in 1952.
Volume VI, Triumph and Tragedy, brings Churchill's history of the Second World War to a close. With sixteen maps and diagrams and eleven folding maps. This is a first edition copy published in 1954.
Collated, complete.
All are in the original unclipped dust wrappers, volumes i and iv are clipped and the others are unclipped.
CONDITION
All are in the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, all are generally very smart with some light marks to the boards and spines and some light bumping to the heads of the spines. With two sets of rear endpapers to vol. ii. Internally, all are firmly bound with bright and clean pages. All are in the original dust wrappers, volumes i and iv are clipped and the others are unclipped. The dust wrappers are faded to the spines and chipped to the head and tails of the spines, especially to volume i , there is some fading to the wraps also. There is a tide mark to the reverse and front of the spin tails of vol i and ii.
