DESCRIPTION

The first edition of this historical novel from William Makepeace Thackery to be published in book form, with these two volumes released in 1858 and 1859. This work was originally issued in twenty-four monthly parts by the publisher, with the first appearing on the 1st November, 1857.

The first issue; 'actresses' on page 207, line 33, Volume I; Chapters 47 and 48 are misnumbered as 48 and 49 in Volume I.

This work is illustrated by Thackery himself, with a number of vignette illustrations, twenty-three plates to volume I, twenty-three plates to volume II, and an illustrated title page to each volume. Collated, complete.

Critical reception of the book was on the whole largely favourable, and the novel has continued to be considered a standard work of nineteenth century fiction, though many critics have held that the novel's plotting was not one of the works strong points.

Bound without half titles and advertisements.

With the inscription of C.E.G. Barnard, 1860, to a front blank of each volume, and the bookplate of D.B. Anderson to the front pastedown of volume I.

CONDITION

In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt detailing to back strip. Externally, lovely. Bookplate to front pastedown of volume I. Front and rear hinge of volume I, and head of front hinge of volume II all starting, but firmly held. Inscriptions to front blanks of each volume. Internally, firmly bound.
