DESCRIPTION

A series of twelve masterpiece unabridged essays by leading essayists of the 1880s, including Irving, Lamb, Macaulay, Gladstone, Emerson, Arnold, de Quincy, Morley, Lowell, Carlyle, Froude, and Freeman. 

Essays include 'Imperfect Sympathies', 'Sweetness and Light', 'On Popular Culture', 'Kin Beyond Sea', and more. 

Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, and eleven portrait plates.

Collated, complete.

Prize label from Lancing College to the front paste down, dated 1915.


CONDITION

In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart, with a little rubbing to the joints and extremities, with a small patch of loss to the tail of the front board. Spine is a little faded. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Prize label to the front paste down. Spots to the fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with a few spots due to the spots to the fore edge.
