Welcome to Antiques & Moore!

This listing is for a very nice antique German sulphide marble with standing lion figure inside. The glass fluoresces under black light and the marble is hand blown with a bottom pontil. The term sulphide is used to describe decorative white silvery encrusted cameo figures that are inserted into molten glass. Although this technique was developed in France and improved upon in England, sulphide marbles were made almost exclusively in Germany in cottage workshops and small factories. German high-volume marble production dates from the 1850's to around WWI.

Measures 1 1/4" in diameter. Weighs 1.7 ounces.

The marble is in very good to excellent Estate condition with a couple of faint external bruises but no chips and reflecting minimal signs of normal use.

Although these marbles were made as children's toys in the late 19th Century, the good sulphides are becoming harder to find with the rare subject matter in the sulphide marbles commanding very high prices. My husband has been collecting marbles for the past 40 years and has finally agreed to let some of them go.
