Vintage1963 Hofner Super Solid III 173 Red Solid Guitar. All original.

The ‘Super Solid’ is one of the first semi-pro lines that Hofner brought out in the early 60s. This 3-pick-up version was the top of the range of the Super Solids. This has a serial number of 2422 and I’m pretty sure is from 1963. (Mark Knopfler’s very first guitar was this exact model.)

Rich, red colour. It has a couple of hairline cracks in the front paintwork and there is noticeable wear along the body edge, as well as a few other knocks and dings, all of which I think I have shown in the photographs. The neck profile is a really comfortable shape, the neck is dead straight, action is low, it plays really well, and gives a wonderful vintage sound.

Bolt on maple neck & bound rosewood fingerboard, lined pearl inlays, black headstock.

Original 4-way switch toggling original ‘Super’ pickups; original knobs controlling volume, tone, tone, tone. Original tremolo bridge. Original tulip shape machine heads. The sixth of these is bent but does not affect tuning. Could be easily straightened with pliers.

The middle pick-up is not working. The dealer who sold it to me said it was an easy fix, but I can’t recall what the exact fault was.

Adjustable bridge. Original tremelo arm fully working – arm shows some damage to the chrome. All other chrome is in good condition and would polish well (but I have not done this). Plastic scratch plate is missing a couple of tiny screws.

There was a soft case included when I bought it. It was described to me as the case that came with the guitar in ’63, but I believe this model usually came in a hard Selmer case. I can't lay my hands on the soft case, but I'm having a clear out and if I find it, I will send it on to you.

I am by no means a guitar expert but will answer any questions best I can.

Free collection in person (Shoreditch, London) preferred, but can also ship.
