The early Liberty Bell planes were transitional, with a steel mechanism mounted in a wooden body. The is type 1 of the metal Liberty Bell plane, showing its ancestry in that a steel mechanism is riveted into the sole. The patent date is engraved on the cheek. The tension screrw looks like it is from a type 2 but the rest of the plane is consistent with type 1.
There is an unusual adjustment mechanism to the right of the frog, with a slot engaging with a bolt through the blade. I have tried to show how it works in the photos.
Interesting plane for collector, with attractive lever cap carrying the Liberty Bell relief in brass.
