Description: Thick folio, 2 volumes in 1, pp. [2], vii, [1], 1574; 66 maps (4 folding), numerous tables; contemporary gift inscription on endpaper, a very good, sound copy in publisher's black cloth, stamped in blind on the upper cover, and in gilt on spine. In Chinese throughout. According to the Baidu entry on the Survey, it is the largest dialect survey in China, and served as a model for other similar surveys. Its focus is almost entirely on phonology and on comparison with historical Chinese, not with other modern dialects.
