  • Beschreibung: Bissige Karikatur auf die Deutsche Kaiserin Augusta, vermutlich anlässlich der Kriegspolitik des Deutschen Reiches um 1870. Zeigt die eigentlich pazifistisch eingestellte Kaiserin barbusig und von Toten umgeben auf einem Schlachtfeld. Dem Kriegsstreben ihres Mannes und des preußischen Ministerpräsidenten Otto von Bismarck, sowie dem Deutsch-Französischen Krieg stand sie ablehnend gegenüber. Die Karikatur greift ihre Machtlosigkeit als Kaiserin gegen die politischen Entscheidungen Preußens bzw. des Deutschen Reiches an.

      Ehefrau des späteren deutschen Kaisers Wilhelms I., seit 1861 Königin von Preußen und nach der Reichsgründung 1871 erste Deutsche Kaiserin. Augusta wuchs am Hof des Großherzogs von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach auf. Dort wurde sie in mehreren Sprachen, Geschichte, Geographie, Theologie, Musik, im Malen und Tanzen unterrichtet. Im Juni 1829 heiratete sie Prinz Wilhelm von Preußen. Die Ehe verlief schwierig, da Wilhelm eigentlich seine nicht standesgemäße Cousine, Elisa Radziwiłł heiraten wollte. Trotzdem bekam Augusta mit Wilhelm 1831 und 1838 zwei Kinder. Nach dem Tod des preußischen Königs Friedrich Wilhelms III. 1840 stieg Augusta zur Gemahlin des preußischen Thronfolgers auf und wurde 1848 Zeugin von dessen Flucht vor der Berliner Märzrevolution. Kurz darauf empfing sie in Potsdam Otto von Bismarck und war anschließend davon überzeugt, dass dieser ihren Mann von der Thronfolge ausschließen wollte. Seither sah sie in Bismarck ihren politischen Hauptfeind und versuchte im Herbst 1862 dessen Ernennung zum preußischen Ministerpräsidenten zu verhindern. Politischen Einfluss verschafften ihr gesellschaftliche Zusammenkünfte am Hof und eine umfassende Briefkorrespondenz. Wie weit Augustas Einfluss auf den König ging, wird gegenwärtig noch in der Forschung diskutiert. Die pazifistisch eingestellte Monarchin betätigte sich auch im karitativen Bereich, etwa mit der Gründung des sogenannten Vaterländischen Frauenvereins 1866 oder der Förderung des Roten Kreuzes.

Links mittig kurzer Randeinriss. Die unteren Ecken sind geringfügig geknickt und bestoßen. Rechts unten kurzer restaurierter Randeinriss. Im unteren Bereich des Druckes schwache Bereibungen erkennbar.

  • Description: Biting caricature of the German Empress Augusta, presumably on the occasion of the war policy of the German Empire around 1870, showing the actually pacifist Empress bare-breasted and surrounded by the dead on a battlefield. She was opposed to the war endeavours of her husband and the Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck, as well as the Franco-Prussian War. The caricature attacks her powerlessness as empress against the political decisions of Prussia and the German Empire.

      Wife of the later German Emperor Wilhelm I, Queen of Prussia since 1861 and first German Empress after the foundation of the German Empire in 1871. Augusta grew up at the court of the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. There she was taught several languages, history, geography, theology, music, painting and dancing. In June 1829 she married Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. The marriage was difficult, as Wilhelm actually wanted to marry his cousin Elisa Radziwiłł, who was not of his rank. Nevertheless, Augusta had two children with Wilhelm in 1831 and 1838. After the death of the Prussian King Frederick William III in 1840, Augusta rose to become the wife of the heir to the Prussian throne and witnessed his flight from the Berlin March Revolution in 1848. Shortly afterwards, she received Otto von Bismarck in Potsdam and was subsequently convinced that the latter wanted to exclude her husband from the succession to the throne. Since then she saw Bismarck as her main political enemy and in autumn 1862 tried to prevent his appointment as Prussian Prime Minister. Her political influence came from social gatherings at court and an extensive correspondence. How far Augusta's influence on the king went is still being discussed in research. The pacifist monarch was also active in the charitable field, for example with the founding of the so-called Vaterländische Frauenverein in 1866 or the promotion of the Red Cross.

Short marginal tear in centre left. The lower corners slightly creased and bumped. Short restored marginal tear lower right. Faint rubbing recognisable in the lower area of the print.
