  • Beschreibung: Aufrecht und streng steht die helle Gestalt des Erzengels vor der Pforte des Paradieses und blickt in die karge Ödnis. Im Vordergrund, nackt und in Lumpen auf dem harten Gestein, kauern Adam und Eva. Die ersten Menschen hatten gegen Gottes Verbot verstoßen und sich an den Früchten des Baumes der Erkenntnis gütlich getan. Die Strafe dafür folgte stante pede, die Vertreibung aus dem himmlischen Garten Eden in das Mühsal der Welt.

  • Inscription: signed indistinctly at lower left and signed indistinctly at lower right, inscribed on old label on verso

  • Date: 1896

  • Description: Upright and stern, the bright figure of the archangel stands before the gate of paradise, gazing into the barren wasteland. In the foreground, naked and in rags on the hard rock, crouch Adam and Eve. The first humans had violated God's prohibition and feasted on the fruits of the tree of knowledge. The punishment for this followed right away, the expulsion from the heavenly Garden of Eden into the toil of the world.
