Briarwood is the root mass of a deciduous shrub of the azalea family (a close relative of the Erica) that grows wild along the Mediterranean coast.

Briarwood grows in harsh wastelands with no rainfall during the summer months.

The trees must be at least 40 to 50 years old to be used as work material.

Once dug up, the briarwood is boiled in a kettle to remove the scum, dried (in the shade for at least 4 months), and then sorted into various grades.

Prior wood is mainly used for smoking pipes, and is called "jewel of wood" because of its beautiful grain. The material is small but very hard and extremely resistant to heat. This piece is handmade by a craftsman.
