Now becoming increasingly hard-to-find, these heavy metal sifters are often misidentified as grain sifters.  This is an antique coal sifter in solid condition.  During the days (1800-1900's) when buildings were heated by coal, the ash would be sifted through the heavy wire mesh sieve so that larger clumps could be salvaged to again be used in furnaces.

It is is solid condition and measures approximately 14.25" diameter x 4.5" deep, plus the handle adds 6".  The handle has some oxidation, there is a small area where the hefty wire has become detached from the rim, but can possibly be easily reset.  Overall, for its age, this item is in great condition.  The last two pictures show how I have used a similar one for decorating (props not included).

This is a family possession offered as a decorative object. No expert knowledge proposed. Please do any research or ask seller any questions prior to purchasing, since it is not returnable.
