This biography traces his musical career, including the period when he was blacklisted by the House Committee on Un-American Activities, and the growth of his conviction that freedom and justice had to be defended and that the power of song could be used to fight back when these ideals were threatened.

An activist and protester, Seeger crusaded for the rights of labor, the rights of people of color, and the First Amendment right to let his voice be heard, and launched the successful campaign to clean up the Hudson River. Anita Silvey has served as editor-in-chief at the Horn Book magazine and worked in children's trade publishing. She is the editor of Children's Books and Their Creators and the author of several nonfiction books for young readers, including Untamed, a biography of Jane Goodall.
