The second in Catton’s “Army of the Potomac” trilogy, this book looks at the AOTP under the command of George McClellan in the early years of the Civil War, and the ineptitude and poor leadership that plagued it during this period. After several major defeats and strategic goofs, McClellan was finally removed, but the damage had already been done, and it took new leadership and the Battle of Gettysburg to turn the tide for the Union. Based on personal recollections and diaries of the participants, this book and the others in the trilogy are a major tour de force in Civil War history. This 1962 Hardcover is in very good condition, with no internal markings other than some stains from the adhesive tape used to secure the plastic jacket in which the fully intact dust jacket lies.
