The Baule people of Ivory Coast and Liberia.


Use.

In African culture, children are viewed as desirable gifts from God, ancestor spirits or deities.


To that extent, virtually every ethnic group in Sub-Saharan Africa host their own carved maternity figures, usually hosted in a household or communal shrine, society members would  worship and offer libation and sacrifices to  while seeking to secure the blessings of the maternity deity over conceiving and birthing healthy children.



Description.

Fine, authentic and rare tribal example created by artisans of the Baule  ethnic group of Ivory Coast and Liberia.



The figure depicts a seated female nurturing mother, with a baby, as a symbol of a maternity deity.


Attractive patination , lustrous to some parts, with colouration of contrasting  dyes to several surface areas.


The maternity figure is adorned with stringed and colourful glass beads to neck and waist.


Attention to detailing and fine artisan workmanship on display throughout .


The maternity figure is vetted a used example believed to be decades old. It was obtained in it's area of original creation and use.


Some minor wood degradation,cracks and chips  but figure is in excellent collector condition throughout.

We are a UK-based business but we source and field-collect authentic tribal treasures in person on the ground in Africa. We therefore sometimes send big and heavy items directly from our storage facility in West Africa to avoid duplication of effort and expenses.
