Paulownia tomentosa, common names princess tree, empress tree, or foxglove-tree, is a deciduous hardwood tree in the family Paulowniaceae, native to central and western China.

The wood of the Paulownia is very unique and is used for making furniture, toys, plywood, musical instruments, housing construction, and for packaging.

The Paulownia may currently be the world's most valuable sustainably harvested hardwood tree. A single 12-foot log can easily bring three thousand dollars. With a harvest time of just 10 years, its wood is as lightweight as balsa yet as strong as hardwoods. The wood features an appealing grain and is a sustainable product with versatile uses.

The blossoms of the Paulownia tree are highly “nectariferous” creating a much-needed source of nectar for pollinating insects including honeybees. It is estimated that one acre of Paulownia tree blossoms can generate enough nectar to produce 100 jars of honey per year.

Trees can also be coppiced on longer rotations for use as poles or fire wood.

Plants in this genus are notably resistant to honey fungus.

Probably the fastest growing tree in the temperate zone.

Paulownia can  be used as a mulch plant providing lots of biomass throughout the growing season.

The Paulownia tree uses an exceptionally efficient form of photosynthesis to fuel its fast growth. In the process it absorbs more carbon than most other trees – about 10 times as much as a pine tree. Ostrom Climate estimated that an acre of mature Empress trees can absorb 30 tons of C02 per year or more.

It is also one of the few trees on the planet that are considered “nitrogen-fixing” meaning it can naturally put nitrogen back into depleted soils, making the local ecosystem healthy again.

The mature tree provides deep summer shade. This shade tree grows rapidly adding 15 feet each year to reach a mature height of 50 feet and width of 30 feet in just 10 years. It is considered one of the fastest growing trees in the world. The leaves of this plant are large and velvety soft looking very much like those on a catalpa tree. The very fragrant flowers, large and violet-blue in color are produced before the leaves in early spring.
