A striking gold Nina Ricci brooch, it features distinctive symbols of the French Revolution.

Nina Ricci, married to a jeweller, worked as a couturier in Paris before she began designing under her own name in 1932. Her jewellery and accessories have an air of refined femininity.

Cockades were widely worn by revolutionaries beginning in 1789.

The tricolore flag is derived from the cockades used in the 1790s. These were circular rosette-like emblems attached to the hat.

The Society of Revolutionary Republican Women, a militant group on the far left, demanded a law in 1793 that would compel all women to wear the tricolore cockade to demonstrate their loyalty to the Republic.
