Why use 14 gauge you wonder? 14 gauge wire is so much easier to bend and work with; especially if you are elderly or have arthritis.
Yes, you can get a few more brews from 12 gauge but not "many many" more brews.
If you compare the diameter of the two, 14 gauge is 0.0641 and 12 gauge is 0.0808, that's only .0167 thousandths difference (a few sheets of paper).
