The first episode opens (5 years earlier) from present day on July 30th, 1979. In the Capwell residence, a reception is being held in honor of (closeted homosexual) son Channing Jr,. the first off-spring, and the apple of his father's eye, the powerful and ruthless C.C. Capwell. Accepting a note inviting him to the Capwell mansion study, Channing Jr. leaves his guests and enters the study when someone fires a gun with a silencer, killing him instantly.

Five years later, July 30th, 1984, Joe Perkins is released from prison (for the murder of) Channing, Jr. on good behavior. Back at the Capwell residence, Kelly Capwell and of her fiancé Peter Flint are celebrating their engagement. It is disappointment that C.C. and his elder son Mason feel learning that the man imprisoned for the murder of Channing, Jr. was released and is getting ready to return to Santa Barbara.

To the contrary, the television announcement of Joe's release excites Marisa and Jade Perkins, the mother and sister of Joe Perkins. They get ready to welcome Joe home, in spite of the little enthusiasm from John, his father.

Ted, the brother of Channing, Jr., avoids the celebration of his sister's engagement to sneak away with his childhood-first love, Laken Lockridge. At the same time, Minx, Laken's grandmother, asks the police to intervene at the Capwell mansion to demand they turn down the music, by pretending to be inconvenienced.

The celebration comes to an end when the engaged couple leave their family and friends to board a helicopter. A mysterious character with long red nails seems concerned about Joe's return and beckons two henchmen to prevent him from getting to town. Manhandled in the bus station, Joe however succeeds in getting on the coach-bound bus for Santa Barbara. En route, he fondly remembers his first and only love, Kelly Capwell, Channing, Jr.'s sister. His daydreaming is short-lived when the henchman open fire on the bus.

Fortunately, nobody is hurt and the bus finally reaches its final destination. In the Santa Barbara station, a crowd has gathered to vocalize their opposition to Joe's release, while Santana Andrade, the daughter of the Capwell's housekeeper, is lurking in the wings, waiting for Joe with weapon in her hand. At the same time, as Joe exists the bus, the helicopter escorting Kelly and Peter flies overhead the rail and bus station. In spite of the distance, Kelly and Joe seem to succeed in sharing a bittersweet glance.
