Palladium jewelry gained popularity during WWII, when platinum became reserved only for the military. It is grouped in the platinum medal family as palladium contain 95% palladium and 5% ruthenium and is called 950 palladium. It is lightweight, durable, and hypoallergenic.

Palladium vs. White Gold

Palladium is made with 95% pure palladium. 14k white gold is made with only 58% pure gold. Palladium jewelry is hypoallergenic with a higher precious metal content. White gold is made of 42% other metals, including a high amount of nickel, which can cause allergies. Palladium is naturally white and does not need to be plated. While white gold on the other hand, is naturally yellow in color, so it needs to be plated with rhodium to make it white in color. Over time white gold with heavy use needs to be re-dipped.

Palladium is a 4.75 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale and gold is a 2.5 (diamonds are a 10). Making palladium more durable and scratch resistant than white gold.
