Some light dampstaining to head and tail of text block. 8 mm oval hole in rear free endpaper caused by insect damage. 5 cm tear to hinge of front endpapers. This particular copy has a frontispiece portrait of Fulton, but it is not the original image that would have been in the published book. The plates are as follows: a holograph letter of Fulton about the engine, 1804; another portrait of Fulton from the collection of Dr. Gilbert L. Parker of Philadelphia; a diagram of Fulton's submarine, "Nautilus", 1798; Fulton's drawings for his first steamboat, 1803; and "The Steamboat" as she appeared in 1807. Only about one-third of the fold-out chart is present, with the missing two-thirds being replaced with a handwritten copy of the original. Binding sound.
