An elegant, vintage French gilded mirror. Decorated with scrolling acanthus leaf motifs in the rococo-style.  Hand-carved in wood, before Indian red underpainting and gold finish  added. Sourced from a reputable French dealer. 20th c.

This beautiful wall mounted mirror is something of a decorator's piece, harking back to the decadent days of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in France, and Casanova in Venice towards the end of the18th c. It takes its inspiration from the flowing scroll and leaf Rococo motifs much favoured by the gilded furniture makers of the period.

Rococo, of course, an exceptionally ornamental and theatrical style of architecture, art and decoration, combining asymmetry, scrolling curves, gilding, sun-burst detailing and sculpted moulding to create surprise and the illusion of motion and drama.

The frame has been produced in a traditional, time-honoured fashion. Hand-carved in wood, before an Indian red underpainting and gold finish added. Original plate mirror with diamond etched surround.

Condition excellent, the backplate recently replaced. Recent brackets and string attached verso for hanging. Minuscule chip to the very bottom. SEE IMAGE 9. Please look carefully at the images as they form part of the description.
