HISTORY AND ORIGINS:

The kilt pin became fashionable in the 1800's and has continued  to this day. Universally worn on all kilts or kilted skirts. Highlanders invariably elaborated the metal parts of their wearing apparel either by the use of precious metal or by introducing Cairngorm stones, polished pebbles or jewels; and this practise  latterly extended to the Kilt Pin.

The Highlander's Love of Ornamentation is a reflection of his lack of Confidence in paper money, which resulted in his embellishing much of his wearing apparel with silver, pewter and cairngorm stones, which are of intrinsic value. Thus he carried upon his person, most of his worldly wealth, rather than entrusting it to banks, which in retrospect seems not a bad idea!

The "Targe" or "Target", was the shield used by the Clansmen in battle; usually of wood and leather, elaborately tooled and ornamented, often with a central Boss furnished with an iron spike.
