"Astoria," by Washington Irving. First edition thus, printed in 1967 by the Portland, Ore., publisher Binfords & Mort, known as the "Clatsop Edition," for being printed at last in the region where the remarkable events recounted in the book too place.

The book has green cloth covers with clean, bright gold-gilt lettering and decoration. Endleaves decrated with beautiful hand-drawn maps by Harold Cramer Smith, whose full-page and chapter-heading illustrations are scattered throughout the text. 

Irving, most famous for Rip Van Winkle, wrote this book after spending many hours listening to the stories of John Jacob Astor, the old German fur-trader, who also introduced Irving to other men who took part in the Astoria enterprise, and who opened up to Irving all his papers and documents.
