GB Universal Mail - International Postcard Rate - Yorkshire UK0054 6/12

Universal Mail International Postcard Rate Tourist Stamps with date code 6/12 bottom right, originally issued in 2012. I have produced a collectors guide to support this section of GB philately and here follows an extract by way of introduction....

What are GB Customised Tourist Stamps?

UniversalMail United Kingdom Ltd is part of an international postage group that has been trading since 2001. With the liberalisation of the postal market in the United Kingdom in 2006 UniversalMail United Kingdom Ltd was formed. UniversalMail United Kingdom has grown to be the premier producer of tourism related and bespoke stamps in the UK. Their stamps can be used to send postcards to any destination outside of the UK. An access agreement with Royal Mail enables any postcard bearing a UniversalMail postage stamp to be mailed through Royal Mail’s extensive network of red post boxes and Post offices located throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The stamps are printed in sheets of 50 stamps (10 strips of 5) and guillotined to form the retail strips comprising 5 x 5cm x 3cm self‐adhesive stamps, printed by Joh. Enschede Security Print, Holland and featuring die‐cut simulated perforations. Unlike the Smilers format stamps from Royal Mail there is no adjoined label to host the generic or personalised image. Essentially each stamp comprises two parts ‐ the "stamp" design is a partial Union Flag to the right side of the stamp with the inscription "International Postcard" or "International Letter" and the license code identifier for UniversalMail "XT 500". The left‐hand part of the stamp features the generic (or personalised) image plus the inscription UniversalMail United Kingdom. Interestingly, these would appear to be the first British stamps to be issued by a licensed UK postal organisation not to bear the Monarchs head in profile although I am prepared to be corrected on this point. Each self‐adhesive strip features five international postcard rate (10g) stamps which may be used as pre‐paid postage for postcards posted to worldwide destinations. In the bottom righthand corner is printed a code comprising a serial number (UK0001) and date code (10/08). The reverse of the strip is printed in white on a black‐green background and provides

additional details of package weights and retail bar‐codes etc,
