NGC F Roman AE4 of Empress Aelia Flaccilla (AD379- 388)

Aelia Flavia Flaccilla (d. 386) was a Roman empress and the initial spouse of Emperor Theodosius I. She hailed from Hispanian Roman heritage and bore two sons, Arcadius and Honorius, both of whom would become future emperors, along with a daughter named Aelia Pulcheria during her union with Theodosius. In 376, Flaccilla married Theodosius I, who became Eastern Roman emperor in 379 after Valens' death. As empress, Flaccilla ardently supported the Nicene Creed and opposed radical Arianism. Renowned for her Christian virtues and charitable deeds, she died in 386, shortly after her daughter, Pulcheria. Gregory of Nyssa delivered her funeral oration. Flaccilla is commemorated as a saint on September 14 by the Eastern Orthodox Church.
