NGC BACTRIA, INDO-GREEKS AR Drachm of HERMAEUS , c.105-90 BC

The Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, referred to as Greco-Bactria, came into existence as a Hellenistic Greek state circa 256 BC. In conjunction with the Indo-Greek Kingdom, it marked the easternmost extent of the Hellenistic world, encompassing regions in Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Originating under the leadership of Seleucid satrap Diodotus I Soter, the kingdom endured until around 120 BC. Some cities continued to be governed by Greek leaders, including Hermaeus Soter (90-70 BC), notably in present-day Kabul. Under the rule of the Diodotid and Euthydemid dynasties, Hermaeus Soter, also known as Hermaios Soter, served as a Western Indo-Greek king within the Eucratid Dynasty. He exercised control over the Paropamisade territory in the Hindu-Kush region, establishing his capital in Alexandria of the Caucasus, situated near today's Kabul, Afghanistan. Notably, historical records indicate instances of trade and diplomacy between the Indo-Greek kingdom and China.
