D'oh!
By David Talk Started in 1987, a year after the creation of PCGS, The Simpsons has now been on air for over 30 years and is the longest-running primetime scripted show in television history. With fans around the world, the oddly yellow family has been embraced by millions.
Throughout the series there have been countless cameos by celebrities, politicians, athletes and other notable figures. A few of them include Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Ron Howard, Charlie Rose, Martin Sheen, Danny DeVito, Linda Ronstadt, John Waters and Paul and Linda McCartney.
The Simpsons series now spans across multiple platforms including television, movies, theme parks, merchandise and multiple video games. Universal Studios has its very own Springfield which includes the infamous Kwik-E-Mart, Moe’s tavern, the Simpsons RIDE™, themed food and drinks, and life-sized characters walking the park.
What’s the next logical step for the Simpson family? Having their own modern coin series of course! The Perth Mint has memorialized the Simpsons once again by producing limited mintage one and two-ounce legal tender silver dollar and two-dollar coins for Tuvalu, an independent constitutional monarchy in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Tuvalu’s partnership with the Perth Mint has produced many different modern coinage series featuring iconic television and movie characters, scenes, animals and other one-of-a-kind creations.
The 2019 Simpsons series features eight different one-ounce coins along with one two-ounce coin, all 99.99% silver. The obverse of each coin within this series features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy design of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Except for Grandpa Simpson, each member of the immediate Simpson family has their very own coin along with a few other iconic scenes and well-known Simpson items.
Lisa is pictured in front of Springfield Elementary lugging around just the right number of books. Marge is in the Simpsons kitchen, in full color including her bright blue hair. Maggie is sleeping on the family living room floor with the Simpsons’ pets, Santa’s Little Helper and Snowball. On Homer’s colorized coin he can be seen in front of Moe’s tavern holding a beer stein overflowing with, Duff Beer? Homer appears again, along with his well-known expression "D’oh!" on both a silver bullion (2019) and gold $100 bullion (2020) coin. Bart is of course pictured in front of one of his favorite stomping grounds, the Kwik-E-Mart, showing us one of his many unique expressions. The Simpsons Donut is just that, a donut, with a bite out of the corner and hole right in the middle. The Simpson family is pictured in front of their iconic home on Evergreen Terrace, accompanied by the family pets. Last but certainly not least, Springfield’s favorite adult beverage, Duff Beer is presented in the iconic shape of a beer can.
