DESCRIPTION

A collection of historical works by John Lothrop Motley, each uniformly bound in half morocco with marbled boards.

John Lothrop Motley was an American author and diplomat, known for his historical works focusing on the Netherlands.

This set is comprised of:

A 'History of the United Netherlands: From the death of William the Silent to the Twelve Years' Truce, 1609', complete in four volumes, with a frontispiece to each volume. Volume I covers from 1584-86, Volume II 1586-89, Volume III 1590-1600 and Volume IV 1600-09. Volume I and II are second editions (1868), while Volume III and IV are first editions (1867).

'The Rise of the Dutch Republic: A History', (1869), a new edition of the work, complete in three volumes.

'The Life and Death of John of Barneveld, advocate of Holland; with a view of the primary causes and movements of the Thirty Years' War' (1874), first edition of the work, complete in two volumes, with a frontispiece to Volume I.

With the stamp of 'The Minnesota Historical Society' to the front paste down of each volume.


CONDITION

In an half morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, with slight rubbing, more so to the joints and extremities. The occasional mark. Minnesota Historical Society stamp and a 'Withdrawn' stamp to the front paste down. Bookseller labels to front paste down of volume one of 'United Netherlands' and volume one of 'John of Barneveld'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the odd mark.
