The transformation of the butterfly from a seemingly lifeless cocoon into a magical moth inspired people in ancient times: they saw the butterfly as a symbol of rebirth. In ancient Greece, the word 'Psyche' referred to the butterfly. In Greek and Roman mythology, the soul often appears with butterfly wings. Elves are also often depicted with butterfly wings, as is the god of sleep.

As a symbol of eternal life and immortality, the butterfly later found its way into Christian art - today it still serves as a symbol of resurrection and with it spring. Pliny believed that butterfly caterpillars appeared when dewdrops fell on the leaves of a tree in spring.
