This is an authentic 1902 print--NOT a recent reproduction

This plate features the eggs of fifteen species of waterfowl and game birds of commercial or recreational importance, or well-known at the turn of the century when this print was designed and produced. Featured in this print are: 1. Pintail Duck, 2. Stormy Petrel, 3. Darter, 4. Virginian Rail, 5. Night Heron, and 6. Gambel's Partridge, 7. Wilson's Phalarope, 8. White Ibis, 9. Spotted Sandpiper, 10. Coot, 11. Zenaida Dove, 12. Willow Ptarmigan, 13. Kildeer, or Plover, 14. American Bittern, and 15. Arctic Tern. These depictions have very fine detail and precise color application to simulate the texture of the egg shells.

This beautiful illustration, dated 1902 in the plate, was exquisitely printed by the Julius Bien & Company in New York City, one of the most prestigious lithographers of the early 20th Century. This 1902 bookplate was printed for inclusion in a fine set of reference material published in 1903.

Printed on medium-weight paper, the overall sheet size is just over 7" x 9.75", and the printed portion (including the text above and below) is 5" x 8.75" (the narrow printed border is 5" x 8", text excluded), with blank margins of 1/4" - 1" all the way around to allow easy matting and framing.

The print is a true stone chromolithograph with the distinctive saturated color and depth. It is a very attractive work, with special attention to detail and accurate hue, and exceptionally well-printed.

I've matted and framed several of these, and they look very nice. Please check my store for other similar botanical prints perfect for framing or incorporating into other projects.

Please note: As the scan below shows, the species are not identified on the print itself, but instead referenced appearing in the 1903 reference text for which this print was originally designed and printed. If the buyer desires it, an accompanying page of text with the labels, or a facsimile excerpt thereof, will be included with this chromolithograph when shipped. Please email me to indicate whether you would like to receive the labels with this print. The label can be incorporated into the artwork (visibly, on the front, or simply affixed to the back) if you choose to mat and frame this print.

A Note on Lithography: One of the delightful and interesting results of the engraving and ink transfer process in lithography is that there can be variants of the prints which look slightly different when compared side-by-side, even though they were produced by the same engraved plates on the same press. This may be a result of additional passes by one color or another, subtle differences in the ink tone, varying pressure from the pressing of the plates, slight variation in the position of each color plate, or other choices made by the engravers or the printers. The result is that each print's appearance is truly unique.

Below is a cropped view of the sheet--without full margins. The image is a fairly accurate representation of the print.

Above: Finely-rendered, detailed depictions of egg specimens from 15 representative species of waterfowl and game birds.

Below: An excerpt (from the accompanying reference material with which this bookplate was issued) identifying the fifteen bird species whose eggs are illustrated on the bookplate. Upon request and if available, the full accompanying text page will be included with the print; otherwise, a facsimile copy of the below excerpt will be issued.

Condition: Excellent. As shown, with no tears or marks.

This is a genuine 1902 stone chromolithograph print--NOT a recent reproduction. It is nearly 120 years old; please handle with care.
