NGC ( F ) FINE Roman AE2 of Magnentius - Rival of Constantius II & Constans
Magnus Magnentius, of Germanic descent, served under Emperor Constans in Gaul and became Western Roman emperor in 350 after killing Constans. Despite efforts to assert legitimacy through reforms, he faced opposition from Eastern Emperor Constantius II. After losing at the Battle of Mons Seleucus, Magnentius took his own life on August 11, 353. His brief reign left the Western Empire militarily weakened, contributing to concerns about defending against barbarian invasions. Constantius II became the sole Roman emperor following Magnentius' death.
