A species of perennial herbaceous plants of the genus Peony. A rhizomatous plant with several furrowed stems, about 1 m high. The rhizome is powerful horizontal.

The root is brown branched with thick spindle-shaped tubers, white on the cut, sweet in taste, when broken it emits a strong smell.

The leaves are large, twice trebly dissected, with pinnate segments divided into lanceolate lobes.

Purple and pink flowers, single, about 10 cm in diameter. The perianth is double. The flowering time comes in May - June. The fruit is a combined leaflet of three to five leaflets.

Prefers fertile soils and sunny places.
