This is a very rare original promotional article (containing a picture) from circa the late 1880's on the world Famous Krao "Farini", a legendary human oddity who was afflicted with Hypertrichosis, a genetic defect that causes excessive hairiness. She was periodically billed as "Drawin's Missing Link", "The Monkey Girl" and "The Ape Woman". This particular image of a younger Krao shows her posing in a manner that many might consider somewhat risque. Hence, the pinup-like appearence of the pose. What we have here is a large, two-sided page that was taken out of the German periodical "Illustrated Chronicle of the Times". One side of the page shows a great engraved portrait of the young lady, while the other side contains a small story promoting her then current appearence at the famous "Castan's Panoptikum" (a dime museum) in Berlin. Please understand that this auction is for the single 2-sided page only and not the entire journal. This is a very rare item. Considering age, it is in very good vintage condition with some small tears along some of the edges. In our view, this is minor and can be expected in antique paper items. The core of this piece is good. The sheet (there are 2 sides) measures approximately 8 ½ x 12 inches and would make a great display piece. Before coming to America, Krao was quite the sensation in Europe. Her career somewhat paralelled that of Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Man, another legendary hairy personality. Krao was a cultured lady. She spoke several languages and enjoyed art and literature. She died in 1926 in New York.
